Before you go
Local tips
- 1Leave Oceanside by 08:00 to clear Los Angeles traffic before the worst midday slowdown.
- 2Buy or bring a National Park pass if you plan more park visits; Pinnacles and Crater Lake both charge entry.
- 3Refuel in Gilroy, Mount Shasta, and Prospect/Medford before mountain or forest stretches.
- 4Visit Burney Falls late afternoon for softer light and fewer day-tripper crowds.
- 5Check Crater Lake road status the night before; June snow can still limit rim access.
- 6Use surface lots over tight garages when possible because the SUV will be easier to load and park.
Good to know
- 1I-5 through Los Angeles, the Bay Area approaches, and Sacramento can have heavy weekday traffic.
- 2Siskiyou Summit on I-5 can have sudden weather changes even in June; monitor forecasts before crossing.
- 3Crater Lake Rim Drive is often only partially open in mid-June because of lingering snow.
- 4Pinnacles and Table Rocks can be hot and exposed in June; heat illness and ticks are real risks.
- 5California and Oregon highways use frequent speed enforcement; keep right except to pass.
- 6Do not leave visible bags or camera gear in vehicles at urban trailheads and downtown parking areas.
