Local tips
- 1Reserve Biltmore, Monticello, WWII Museum, Ruby Falls and Whitney Plantation tickets before departure.
- 2Start outdoor days before 09:00; July heat index is highest in Mobile, New Orleans and Louisiana bayou areas.
- 3Use valet or hotel lots in Asheville, New Orleans and Birmingham; downtown garages can be tight for SUVs.
- 4Fuel before leaving Asheville for the Smokies and before long I-10/I-49 stretches with kids onboard.
- 5Check live music calendars in Lafayette and Ocean Springs for family-friendly early shows.
Good to know
- 1I-64, I-81, I-40, I-10 and I-20 can have summer construction and heavy holiday-season traffic.
- 2Great Smoky Mountains National Park requires paid parking tags for stops over 15 minutes.
- 3Blue Ridge Parkway and US-441 can close temporarily for storms, fog, rockfall or crash cleanup even in summer.
- 4Gulf Coast and Louisiana afternoon thunderstorms can bring sudden flooding on low roads and poor visibility.
- 5New Orleans French Quarter streets are narrow; avoid driving there with an SUV when walking or rideshare works.
- 6Do not leave bags visible in parked vehicles at urban museums, trailheads or downtown hotel loading zones.
